I know what you’ve all been thinking during the pandemic, where is the best place to buy wine!? Okay, maybe you were momentarily caught up with other concerns but now might be a good time to regain some perspective.
So where is the UK’s wine buyer’s hot spot? Well brace yourself for a contrarian answer: Tesco!
You’ve probably been told by a snobby hipster at some point that you can’t buy good wine in a supermarket. This is both true and completely wrong, there’s plenty of bland cheap wine for people who aren’t fussy but there’s always a bargain or two on the top shelves. Knowledge is power! πΎπ·
But why Tesco specifically? A few reasons – firstly, they do some very dumb things (by which I mean good for us). I bought a bottle of Krug for Β£50 at Tesco! Believe it or not a bottle of Penfold Grange for Β£100 (which I resold on Fine & Rare for Β£375!) Secondly and in relation, several times a year they run range discounts (25% off) at the same time as line discounts. You can get seriously good wines for a fraction of their value.
Even without their “25% off wine” promotion I got this epic bottle of Heidsieck (in the middle) for half it’s true worth.
Boutiques have their place but smart money doesn’t follow fashion, it spots arbitrage opportunities ππ
