There’s always room for hope

For the last 4 years America has performed a rectal exam on itself, in full view of the world’s media. Unsurprisingly it has not been pretty, but I hope one day we can look back and see it as necessary. “Business as usual” is the fundamental reason America is coming apart at the seams, it serves too few and robs too many. Trump hasn’t caused his base to be angry, he has exploited deep (and in some cases justified) pre-existing anger.

For decades America’s elite has gaslighted it’s own people, pretending that the American Dream is alive and well when it’s obviously on life support. I know how they feel, the Tory government in the UK draws its lifeblood from the same lies and stokes the same anger, although they are skilled at misdirecting it towards society’s weakest and most vulnerable.

America’s inner demons won’t go away with one man reciting a few words with his hands on the Bible, but I seek solace in knowing that heart and soul are back in America’s highest office.

I hope Joe Biden has the strength and wisdom to see that “business as usual” is the problem rather than the solution. Without a valid diagnosis Trumpism will be back in 4 years time, perhaps in an even more dangerous mutated form.
